A whole and a half Ivorians The unrest in Côte d'Ivoire stems from a fierce battle between the two politicians Laurent Gbagbo and Alassane Ouattara, which has been going on for decades and which reflects some fateful fractures between the northern and southern parts of the country. Gbagbo is a Christian from the south, Ouattara a Muslim from the north. To briefly retell the dramatic story, we must go back to 1971, when Côte d'Ivoire's first president after independence, Felix Houphouët-Boigny, has been in power for 11 years. He has turned the country into a one-party state and is a dictator that people do wisely to align with and keep their mouths shut. But not everyone is afraid of "The Big Elephant", as he is called. For example, 26-year-old teacher and political activist Laurent Gbagbo is publicly advocating for the president's resignation. Gbagbo for the next ten years again and again behind bars. In 1982 he spearheaded a nationwide strike among teachers and founded the party "The Ivorian People's Front, which has the clear goal of overthrowing Boigny. The earth gets so hot under Gbagbo that he must go into exile in France, meanwhile the Soviet Union dissolves, the Berlin Wall falls and new winds blow, also over Africa. The international community, led by the United States, is pushing for dictatorships to be transformed into democracies, and Boigny hears the key and in 1990 prints elections. Gbagbo returns home to Ivory Coast and stands as the only candidate against the president who wins big. In 1992, Gbagbo is again thrown into prison, this time with his wife, Simone. They have "incited violence". But it is not Boigny himself who is behind the imprisonment. So does Alassane Ouattara, the prime minister and the president's loyal protégé. Gbagbo is released after six months, and on December 7, 1993, he hears on the radio Ouattara announcing to the nation that Boigny is dead. Ouattara says that "Ivory Coast has become an orphan" and suggests that he himself can easily take over the role of father in the country. But the same ambition has the chairman of the National Assembly, Henri Konan Bédié, who according to the constitution is formally interim president. He fires Ouattara and tells the people that it is he and not Ouattara who now rules the country, and to put a trump card on, he introduces the "law of ivority", which stipulates that only "whole" Ivorians can stand for election. Ouattara's father is from Burkina Faso and Ouattara is therefore only "half" Ivorian and from now on excluded from standing for election. He is thus hung up at the presidential election in the year 2000, where Gbagbo again appears on the field, stands and wins. With Gbagbo as president, the rivalry between him and Ouattara comes to the fore. Ouattara is popular in the north of the country and could become a threat to Gbagbo in an election. Therefore, Gbagbo leaves the law of ivority as it is and at the same time does not neglect a moment to exhibit Ouattara's half Burkina identity. He calls Ouattara half burkini, half Frenchman and lackey for France, and outlines Ouattara's many connections with the unpopular French, such as that Ouattara has lived in France for long periods, is married to a French woman, and that the wedding took place at Neuilly town hall. -sur-Seine and was made by Ouattara's close friend, the city's young mayor, later president, Nicolas Sarkozy. Ouattara, for his part, is trying to escape the "nationality trap" by persuading Burkina Faso President Blaise Compaoré to publicly declare him a "true Ivorian". Gbagbo ignores the message from the president of the neighboring country. At the same time, the Ivory Coast's schisms between the northern and southern parts of the country emerge more strongly.A divide is that a large minority of the population in the north has ancestry in Burkina Faso and as Ouattara can be accused of being only "half" Ivorians. Another is the religious divergence, where the majority in the north are Muslims and most in the south are Christians. But the deepest gap is the material differences. The north has the worst, driest soil, while the south benefits from fertile agricultural land and the financial center Abidjan with the region's largest port. Everyone knows that "the rich" live in the south and "the poor" in the north. Ouattara has set out to correct the imbalances and wants power in the country. To that end, he joins forces with a young soldier from the north, Guillaume Soro, who with colleagues from the government army has formed the party "The Patriotic Movement" and an armed part of the "Forces Nouvelles". In late 2002, they set course for Abidjan to overthrow Gbagbo.
